Where To Eat And Drink in Roatan West End – updated 2024
Roatan has great food and you may be surprised to know that great food doesn’t have to mean expensive! To be quite frank, the meals I spent the most mulah for, were the most disappointing.
I am going to share with you my favorite places to eat in Roatan West End. Plus, you will find them budget friendly.
Yahongreh – Best Breakfast In West End Roatan At A Great Price
Yahongreh quickly became my new favorite spot for breakfast when in West End. The prices are affordable, the food was consistently good and filled me up until lunchtime. I often ordered a breakfast plate that includes egg, ham or bacon, tortilla and beans for 125 lps (around $6). You can easily spend a lot more for the same thing at some of the other restaurants, so its a pretty good deal.
If you want to check out their menu, you can check out their facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/yahongrehcafe/
And of course they have the famous Honduran Baleada. A baleada is a home made flour tortilla with beans & cheese although, you can also get other ingredients inside like eggs or meat. You can’t leave Honduras without trying one!
Quick travel tip on spending money in Roatan – You can use US Dollars in West End. Yohongreh takes cash only, but there are many restaurants in West End and West Bay that credit cards. I explain this in more detail on the Roatan Travel Guide. Read the travel guide here: Roatan Travel Guide
Calelus
I ate at Calelus several times during my visits to Roatan. Calelus is a restaurant, a small grocery store and street food vendor all in one. It is conveniently located on the main road of West End with a laid back island vibe.
They have some great ice cold fruit smoothies made from fresh, sweet, ripe fruit. Soooo refreshing on a hot day. By the way, the fruit in Roatan is amazingly ripe and sweet! (Best when certain fruits are in the height of its season) If you happen to be there when Mangos are in season, you are in for a treat.
Calelu’s has a $6 lunch special every day. It includes a meat dish, plantains, rice and salad. (see above picture)
Let’s talk about $1.50 Baleadas. Do you love fresh handmade made tortillas? In Honduras, Balaedas are made with handmade tortillas filled with beans and a little cheese. (Pictured above to the right). This is the ultimate cheap eat. Their Balaedads are only $1.50. If you to add meat or eggs for breakfast, you can pay a few bucks more. It is very filling.
Other items on the menu include ceviche, conch soup, meat dishes, seafood and more. There is a good variety to choose from.
West End Has Excellent Street Food Vendors
Why is street vendors on my list? I had the best chicken of my life from a street vendor on West End that served BBQ chicken, homemade tortillas, rice and beans all for $5. Surprised? Yes, I was too! Let me tell you why….I was one of those people that used to be a little standoffish about street food in the past, but not anymore after that BOMB.COM chicken! (that’s what I call it lol)
I am pretty sure it was not just any hormone pumped chicken out the freezer that has been there for who knows how long. The quality was great and most likely free range chickens… how it should be (but we don’t often get that at home in the US).
The tortillas were handmade and sooooo good with the beans and rice. Give street food a chance while in Roatan. You can find some of the vendors directly beside the main road in West End by the beach near Half Moon Bay. They are often there in the afternoon and also late-night if you need a late night bite.
La Ruta Del Sabor – Great El Salvadorean Pupusas
I finally tried this restaurant on my last couple of visits to West End and I wish I hadn’t waited so long!
The pupusas were absolutely delicious. If you have never had a pupusa before, this is the place to try them for the real thing. Plus, you can add this restaurant to the “budget friendly” list of places to eat in Roatan.
Sundowners Restaurant and Bar
Sundowners is in a perfect location on the beach in West End where you can enjoy a drink while you lounge in their beach chairs under palm trees or have a nice lunch inside their open-air restaurant.
They also raise awareness to Keep The Reef Safe and they do their part by eliminating plastic straws, cups, and plates from their restaurant. They use paper straws instead which is so helpful being that they are right on the beach. This is a great practice that I support 100% so that I can enjoy the reef for many decades to come. I hope that all Roatan restaurants will adopt this practice over time.
They are also a well-known bar in town for expats serving very good drinks. The bartenders were are friendly and they work for tips only. They make you feel right at home and welcomed in Roatan.
Gingers Restaurant
Gingers is in a prime location, right on the edge of West End beach. Enjoy a meal and then walk right to the sand to enjoy some of the warmest and most beautiful water you have ever seen in your life.
Budget about $10-$20 per person for Gingers. They have a good variety of food including fresh seafood, salads (I like to lobster salad), burgers, cocktails and more.
