Not far from New Orleans area is a very different landscape called the bayou. The Bayou is picturesque and has a very different scenery than the city of New Orleans. I took a swamp tour with Cajun Pride Tours to get a chance to learn more about the culture, history, swamps and wildlife of the Bayou. It was also a good chance to get away from the main city and tourist areas.
The scenery was beautiful and I enjoyed the tour where we saw aligators, snakes, crawfish and other wildlife. If visiting the New Orleans area, I would recommend visiting the Bayou for a swamp tour because it’s not something you can see anywhere you visit and why miss an opportunity to do something you have never done before!?
Below is a video with a few scenes from the tour.

A couple things to know. Bayou just means slow moving stream. There is one in the heart of the city called bayou St. John. It is nothing like you imagine. Since you found Storyteller, if you go back there and search for it, you’ll find pictures of it. It is also a good place to go to get away from “tourist” New Orleans.
Oh I see. Thanks for sharing. But the area where the swamps are, is it still referred to the Bayou … or should I call it something else?
We are surrounded by and built on swamps. Most of New Orleans outside of the Quarter and heading toward the lake, with the exception of the “Sliver by the River” is reclaimed swampland.
Where were you when you took the tour? Likely, the bayou has a name. I probably could tell you what it is.
The Sliver by the River are the neighborhoods that didn’t flood following Hurricane Katrina. They are located on slightly higher ground. Only about 20% of the city.
