Cenotes are a magnificent natural wonder to behold and one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever set sights on. Swimming in them can feel absolutely magical. The best place in the world to see them is in Mexico.
In Mexico’s Yucactan Penninsila, there are hundreds of cenotes, maybe thousands if we include the ones not yet discovered or public. With so many, you can find one that you can easily have all to yourself. The secret is to skip all the over-hyped cenotes circulating on Instagram and other social media where all the crowds will be.
A stunning and mostly empty cenote is Xcanahaltun near Valladolid Mexico. Imagine swimming in some of the freshest water on the earth and hearing the sounds of the jungle echo through the cenote, without any other people to obstruct your experience. Be one with nature… No people yelling. No crowds. No one in your selfies or pictures if that’s your thing.
Cenote Xcanahalun is accessed by going down stairs into a cave. You may expect darkness when you enter but instead, you see water that is so blue and bright that it almost seems to light up the whole cave.
What gives the cave its light is that it’s illuminated by natural rays of light that shines through from two collapsed areas at the top of the cave. As the light hits the water, you see the most incredible color of blue that looks electrifying!

How to get to Xcanahaltun Cenote
I had a personal driver and taxi service take me to this cenote in addition to multiple places in the area during a day trip from the town of Valladolid. The price for a driver for the day were very very reasonable! My drivers were Carlo and Miguel and I can highly recommend either one of them. They can take you anywhere for the day.
To get in touch with Carlo, who speaks English or Spanish, his info is below.
Carlo is super knowledgable about Mayan history and culture too and he has many wonderful stories to tell along the ride. You will learn a whole lot during the trip and not only see beautiful places.
